Shrimp Etouffee – A Comforting Southern Meal for Busy Stay-At-Home Parents

As a stay-at-home parent, it can be difficult to find time to make a comforting meal while still caring for the family. Enter Shrimp Etouffee, a classic Cajun dish that can be prepared in less than an hour and will fill your home with the smell of New Orleans. This dish combines succulent shrimp with a flavorful roux, vegetables and spices to create a delicious and comforting meal that will make you and your family happy.

The ingredients for this meal are simple, yet flavorful. You’ll need two pounds of peeled and deveined shrimp, two tablespoons of olive oil, one cup of diced onion, half a cup of diced celery, one-fourth cup of diced bell pepper, two cloves of minced garlic, two tablespoons of flour, one teaspoon of paprika, one teaspoon of cayenne pepper, one tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, one teaspoon of thyme leaves and some salt and pepper to taste. You’ll also need two cups of chicken broth and one-fourth cup of chopped parsley to finish the dish.

Start by heating the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion, celery, bell pepper and garlic and sauté until the vegetables are softened. Once the vegetables are softened add the flour and stir until it creates a thick paste. Cook for about two minutes before stirring in the paprika, cayenne pepper and Worcestershire sauce. Cook for another minute before adding the chicken broth. Bring the mixture to a boil before reducing the heat to low and simmering for about 20 minutes until it thickens slightly.

Add the shrimp to the skillet along with the thyme leaves and season with salt and pepper to taste. Simmer for about five minutes until the shrimp are cooked through then stir in the chopped parsley. Serve over hot cooked rice or your favorite pasta noodles.

Shrimp Etouffee is an ideal meal for busy stay at home parents as it is easy to prepare with simple ingredients yet still packs flavor punch enough to satisfy picky eaters in your family. And don’t forget that it is also a great way to bring a little bit of New Orleans flavor into your home!

My family has been enjoying Shrimp Etouffee for years now; I remember my mother making it often when I was growing up. She would tell me stories about her own mother cooking this same dish when she was growing up in Louisiana, saying that no matter how far away we were from home Shrimp Etouffee always reminded her of New Orleans. Now I make Shrimp Etouffee often with my own children; I love being able to share stories from my childhood with them as we enjoy this comforting meal together.
